    World Water Week, Aug. 21-27

    World Water Week is hosted and organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute and takes place each year in Stockholm. The theme for 2011 is "Water in an Urbanising World." A number of distinguished guests, including the 2011 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate, will deliver presentations, workshops, seminars and more.     Fast food restaurant turns green

    A quick service restaurant chain that specializes in chicken menus is now going to the greener side of the food industry. The Chick-fil-A location in Fort Worth, Texas, is seeking a LEED certification from the U.S Green Building Council. Green features in the location include storm water collection for landscape irrigation, low-flow plumbing fixtures in the bathrooms and kitchen, and energy-efficient light system with light sensors. The fast food restaurant could save up to 14% on electric costs and 40% on water. Click here for more on the project.

    Plumbing Manufacturers International Spring Conference summary

    Plumbing Manufacturers International (PMI) hosted its Spring Conference, March 27-30, 2011 at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, LA. "Let the Good Times Roll…Again" was the theme for this meeting.     World Vision honors Barbara C. Higgens

    Barbara C. Higgens, Plumbing Manufacturers International’s (PMI’s) executive director, will be recognized with a Crystal Vision “Robert P. Atkins Life Time Achievement Award.” World Vision will present the award during the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show on April 26 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Higgens will be the third person ever to receive the Life Time Achievement Award. The award honors individual dedication to World Vision’s mission of ‘working with children, families and their worldwide communities to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.”

    For more than 10 years, Higgens has championed The Storehouse of World Vision, which addresses the needs of Americans suffering from disaster, personal crisis or economic hardship by providing families with supplies, including building products and materials. Companies donate excess inventory or produced-to-give products to The Storehouse’s warehouses. The Storehouse, in turn, partners with other nonprofit organizations to install these much-needed products and materials in homes, shelters, rehabilitation facilities, schools, daycares, churches, and other community centers.

    AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust Promotes Green Building

    The AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust (HIT) is helping to finance a number of energy-efficient and water-efficient development projects registered to earn the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®) certification. To date, the HIT has provided $274 million of financing for 11 projects that have received or are expected to receive LEED designation. The projects have created 1,653 housing units and approximately 4,100 union construction jobs, while leveraging more than $660 million of development activity for communities in Minnesota, California, New York and Massachusetts.     PMI’s new name reflects global vision

    PMI announces the association has changed its name to Plumbing Manufacturers International. For 35 years, PMI was the acronym for the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute. While preserving the reputation and recognition of PMI, the updated name reflects the association's and its members’ worldwide involvement and outreach. Reflecting this global leadership role, PMI also refreshed its brand identity, website and other marketing communications that will be introduced throughout the year and culminate with its presence at Greenbuild® International Conference and Expo, Oct. 4-7, 2011, in Toronto.

    ASPE Joins PERC

    The Plumbing Efficiency Research Coalition (PERC) is pleased to welcome the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) as the sixth member of the group. PERC was founded in 2009 to develop research projects that will support the development of water efficiency and sustainable plumbing products, systems and practices.     Greening the Blue

    Launched in 2010, "Greening the Blue" communicates with all United Nations' staff as well as external stakeholders. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability throughout the UN system and highlight what’s been achieved, what’s happening next and how staff can get involved. The work to create a more sustainable UN is now coordinated through the Issue Management Group (IMG) on Sustainability Management, which is serviced by the Sustainable United Nations (SUN) facility and reports to the Environment Management Group (EMG).

    FedEx pursues LEED, water savings

    FedEx Express has made LEED Certification the standard for their newly-built U.S. facilities. LEED® Green Building Rating System™ is the leading benchmark for buildings that are designed, constructed and operated sustainably. The newly-constructed FedEx Express Las Vegas facility is the first building in the company to receive LEED certification, followed closely by FedEx Memphis-based World Headquarters' LEED Gold certification.
    The FedEx Express Las Vegas facility reduces indoor water use by 49% with the installation of low-flow plumbing fixtures. Click here to read more about the facility in Green Real Estate Daily.

    Jim Galvin to provide senior-level technical support for PMI

    Plumbing Manufacturers International (PMI) is pleased to announce that Jim Galvin has joined PMI to provide senior-level technical support. Galvin is retired from Symmons Industries after 39 years, the last 15 focusing on codes and standards. He will share his industry insight with PMI and nurture important liaisons with organizations including the Alliance for Water Efficiency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
